4For example, let’s take a look at defensive tackle Dan Williams‘ contract. He signed a four-year, $25 million deal. Regardless of his performance, the team owed him money for the first two years. Entering his third season, the Raiders can release the veteran defensive tackle without paying him a cent going forward.

Ironically, Williams’ play declined in the previous season. He arrived with a penchant for plugging gaps and stopping the run. The 300-pound defensive lineman fell behind Justin Ellis on the depth chart. When on the field, he failed to live up to previous expectations as a solid run defender. He received a 55.7 grade on run defense, per Pro Football Focus. The Raiders can cut Williams and recoup $4.5 million in cash, per Over The Cap, which may be useful toward re-signing a productive in-house free agent or signing a quality player off the market.

Winston later tried to clarify that he was trying to motivate a particular student without singling him out.

“I was making an effort to interact with a young male in the audience who didn’t seem to be paying attention, and I didn’t want to single him out, so I asked all the boys to stand up,” Winston said, according to the newspaper. “During my talk, I used a poor word choice that may have overshadowed that positive message for some.”

A Buccaneers public relations official told ESPN that the team is not planning to comment on Winston’s remarks.

Winston has worked to rehabilitate his image since his days at Florida State, when he was accused of sexually assaulting a female student in 2012.

“To tell you the truth? I really don’t think so,” Gronkowski said. “The fans are nuts. They are wild. They have the Patriots’ back no matter what. They have Tom’s back, I’m telling you. [Goodell] won’t get through the highway if the fans saw him. I don’t even think he can land in the airport in Boston, because Patriots fans are the best fans. They’re the most loyal fans.

“I’m telling you, they might just carry out Roger themselves. They couldn’t even get to the stadium in Foxborough, if he landed in Boston.”
